Supplemental Index - How Does Your Site Get In It

Supplemental Index

Supplemental index is a supplementary Google search index collection of all the lesser considered important web pages than those more important ones. According to the Google page rank which was first introduced and developed by Larry Page at Stanford University and later on urged and followed by Sergey Brinn as part of some research project regarding a new type of search engine way back in 1995. This research actually resulted to what was later on in 1998 recognized as an actual running prototype of the now world-renowned search engine called Google. So it was really after all, these two guys (Sergey Brinn and Larry Page) that initiated the making and responsible for the live function of the greatest invention of all that contributed to the revolutionizing of the world wide web's search engine arena - The Google Search Engine.

Today, supplemental results displayed by Google can be seen in green colors at the bottom of a search result and labeled "supplemental result" to indicate that it is in the supplemental index or part of a sub-result of less importance from the regarded more important result. A concrete example of this can be found below.

It is said that getting labeled as a supplemental result is really a way to tell the site's webmaster that Google is indeed using some filters or ways to know if a webpage has to fall in it because of many reasons. This means that the webmaster needs to modify the pages to contain enough unique content and to make it out of the supplemental index and instead get back into Google’s main index.
The importance of the web page is important for most webmasters to be able to escape being labeled as a part of supplemental result and this is in fact determined by a number of factors. Such are the age of the webpage and the content, if it is considered duplicate or not. For my part, i would suggest that you avoid copying or giving your webpage a duplicate look in the eyes of the search engines. As a tip, let me let you know that supplemental pages will still rank in the search results, but only if there are not enough pages in the main index that are returned within the search or if only for the first few weeks and not long enough for your pages to stay on their rankings. Today, one way of getting in the supplemental results is by way of feeds made available through the RSS capabilities of webpages.

Supplemental Index - How Does Your Pages Get In It?
There are 8 least possible ways that a webpage or website gets into the supplemental search index. All of them though are just part of search engine optimization experiments and experiences of many other webmasters in the early days and in past experiences.

1. You have duplicate content
2. You used more images in your pages than texts of real value to your website
3. Your meta tags, title and description are identical
4. Your contents are only coming from RSS feeds
5. You have no or too little inbound links going your pages (sometimes called "orphaned pages")
6. Identical footer, header and sidebar aesthetic designs and contents
7. You have too much reciprocal rather than inbound links compared
8. You have contents that literally came from a database
